Believing is Seeing

The boys and I were in the kitchen. I was getting them breakfast as I heard the sound of our front door opening and someone walking inside from the other room.

I said to the boys, “Daddy’s home!”

G replied to me, “It doesn’t look like it.”

I said, “It may not look like it, because we don’t see daddy in this room, but it sure sounded like he was home!” and then Joe started to talk to us from the other room.

G still didn’t believe that his daddy was home! He said, “Daddy, are you home??” and even though Joe responded to him and told him yes, G still had to go into the other room to see if it was really him…

And it made me think of doubting Thomas: he’d been told Jesus was alive by many good friends who had seen Jesus for themselves, but he wouldn’t believe until he had seen him with his own eyes.

Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29

He’s talking about us! We have the privilege of being blessed when we believe because we have not seen Jesus Christ with our own eyes. We have heard about him, and we can read the testimony about him in God’s word. We know he’s there and don’t need to go have a look in the other room to see if it’s really him! Let’s thank God together for the amazing grace he’s given us through Jesus Christ his son!

And if you don’t believe because you haven’t seen? Take a good look at the evidence. We have many sources outside of the gospels that talk about Jesus and the early church from that early time period. Jesus was a real person. So we need to investigate his claims: was he who he said he was, who the early church believed he was, or was he a liar and the apostles all loony to give their lives for something they knew was a sham?

It’s like G in the kitchen. He had to go to the other room to see Daddy home for himself. He could have believed it, because there was enough evidence to know. There is enough evidence to know Jesus is God, and is alive! If you have more specific questions on that, I’d love to hear them in the comments, and we can write more extensively on the topic. I’m praying that you would see God at work in your lives this week.
