To us a Mighty God is born.
If you’re new here, each week we all learn about and memorize a Bible verse together. We’ve put the verse(s) into song to help you learn the verse and recall it during your day. If you’d like to see the archives of all the verses we’ve done so far, you can find our posts here and a list of all the YouTube videos here. On to this week’s verse!
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)
Devotional
This is a great verse to ponder right after Christmas. It keeps the Christmas spirit alive a bit longer, but also helps us transition away from the Christmas season and start thinking about the rest of Christ ministry, life, death, and resurrection because when was the last time you thought about a baby being in charge of all the governments or being thought of as a “Wonderful Counselor”? We need this reminder that this little baby isn’t just a baby. He grew up to be the savior of the world and our Lord!
Besides this, we ought to take the time to look over each of these names and consider how each one affects us:
- Wonderful Counselor: He makes the wisest man look foolish, so he may be the best place to go for counsel.
- Mighty God: Two bits here: he’s mighty and he’s God, though those do generally go hand-in-hand. We’ve discussed his might in the past, too. Don’t ever underestimate his power!
- Everlasting Father: Another 2-parter: 1) He’s eternal and 2) he’s our father. That eternity has given him lots of time to brush up on those dad skills, so he’s the best dad in the world!
- Prince of Peace: He’s the ruler that brought peace to our world!
I don’t have much to say about each point, but I’m sure that if you take the time to ponder them yourselves, you’ll find plenty of wonderful things to say about our God! Feel free to let us know what those thoughts are down in the comments too! We’d love to read them!
